Second Annual Bikes on the Border Wrap Up

The Second Annual Bikes on the Border was held March 21st and 22nd in Kings Mountain North Carolina.  We had 67 registrations, up 63% from last year.  The conference was an opportunity for motorcyclists from the Carolinas and Virginia to gather and discuss topics of importance to motorcyclists and to motorcycle rights organizations.

Attendees arrived Friday March 21st and enjoyed fellowship over a few beverages at the hospitality room.  The following day, the conference was held at the H. Lawrence Patrick Conference Center in Kings Mountain, NC.  Topics covered included federal legislation affecting motorcyclists, a panel discussion on effective lobbying on both the state and federal level, insurance law and how it affects motorcyclists, and a presentation on dealing with toxic members in your motorcycle rights organization.  There was also a roundtable discussion on issues of importance to motorcyclists in each state in attendance.

Presenter’s included Dennis Welborne with ABATE of South Carolina, Cindy Hodges with CBA/ABATE of North Carolina, John Pierce with ABATE of Oklahoma, Jeff Hennie, Vice President of Governmental Affairs and Public Relations for the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF), as well as members of Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group.

The conference concluded with a banquet featuring a silent auction as well as a 50/50 raffle with the proceeds of both going to the MRF.  The auction and raffle raised $827.00 for the MRF.

Given the feedback we received from attendees a Third Annual Bikes on the Border is inevitable.  We are looking forward to announcing the details in the future.

Lower 48

August of this year we set out on another Firm ride.  This year it was to Washington State and back in 12 days riding through 25 states and putting, roughly, another 6,700 miles on our bikes.  On the eastbound ride back from Washington, Matt and Jim completed the lower 48.  Jim completed riding in all lower 48 states in Minnesota and Matt two states later in Indiana.  Congratulations Matt & Jim!  Rumor has it that they will put Alaska under their belt in 2015.

The annual give away, or bike drawing was held on November 1, 2013 and we are proud to announce that this year’s winner is Mr. Thomas Carlyle of Sanford, N.C.
Tom is an employee of the NC Department of Transportation at its Carthage, N.C. office. A rider most of his life Tom rides a Honda Gold Wing and reports that his work is a good ride from home. With the new Royal Enfield getting close to 80 miles to the gallon it should make the ride even more fun. Congratulations Tom!

To let you know what your chances were, we had just over 15,000 entries. With odds that beat Power Ball®, Mega Millions® or other games you might want to make sure you sign up for the 2014 give away.

Many of you will be receiving a mailer this Spring from our firm and that mailer will have an entry card for the 2014 give away, fill it out and send it in. You can also sign up at any event where you see the Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law Group tent or trailer, or go online to Tom McGrath’s Motorcycle Law

Cross Country Trip

The big week is finally here, later this week we embark on a trip to Washington state.  Upon completion of this trip Matt and Jim will have ridden in all the lower 48. We will spend the week servicing motorcycles, testing gadgets etc. Like our New England trip last year I will be posting a link to a spot page so you can follow us via GPS tracking.  We decided to take it easy this year so we’re only doing around 6000 miles in 11 days.  We’ll post pics and updates as we get underway.
